September 2013 CDC.gov Web Feature: State Costs of Excessive Alcohol Consumption CDC is featuring the CDC Alcohol Program’s recent release of “State Costs of Excessive Alcohol Consumption, 2006,” published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine (AJPM). Find out how much excessive alcohol consumption costs your state. Note: The article that is currently available on the AJPM Web site includes an updated version of Table 4. Please use this version of the article instead of the version that was released on August 13. The results that were reported in Tables 1–3 and in the text are the same in both article versions. CDC Webinar on the Prevention of Underage and Binge Drinking Available Online An online archive is now available of a webinar CDC hosted in June for the Interagency Coordinating Committee on the Prevention of Underage Drinking (ICCPUD). The webinar—The Role of Public Health in Preventing Underage Drinking and Excessive Drinking by Adults—features national experts who discuss the problem of excessive alcohol use, the relationship between state alcohol policies and excessive drinking, the status of alcohol interventions included in The Community Guide, and presents case studies of communities that are using these interventions. New Manuscript on Commercial Host (Dram Shop) Liability The manuscript “Commercial Host (Dram Shop) Liability: Current Status and Trends” was published recently in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. This article presents the status of commercial host liability laws in the 50 states, and shows how these laws have faced increasing limitations in recent years. The article was authored by Jim Mosher and Elena Cohen of Alcohol Policy Consultations and David Jernigan of the Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth at Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, with support from CDC. Podcast: Bob Brewer, MD, MSPH “On the Air” The CDC Alcohol Program’s Bob Brewer was recently featured in the inaugural podcast of the new CDC series “On the Air.” The series features on-air interviews with CDC experts. In this podcast, Dr. Brewer speaks with the public radio station KQED in San Francisco about the problem of binge drinking among women and girls.
