NIAID Expands Nationwide Network of Vaccine and Treatment Evaluation Units

This month, NIAID awarded nine contracts to strengthen and broaden the scope of its Vaccine and Treatment Evaluation Units (VTEUs), a nationwide group of institutions that has conducted clinical trials of candidate vaccines and therapies for more than 50 years.

The new set of awards increases the number of funded institutions from eight to nine and expands the VTEUs’ ability to study infectious diseases in both domestic and international settings. By studying diseases where they are endemic, scientists will be able to learn more about the origin and evolution of emerging diseases and improve the evaluation of candidate diagnostics, vaccines, and treatments.

For more on the VTEUs’ past accomplishments and the new contracts, see the NIAID news release at: http://www.niaid.nih.gov/news/newsreleases/2013/Pages/vteu.aspx.
