National Gay Men’s HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, Sept. 27, reminds us of the heavy toll HIV continues to take on gay and bisexual men across the United States. While men who have sex with men (MSM) represent two percent of the U.S. population, they account for more than 60 percent of new infections and half of all Americans living with HIV. Young MSM are the only risk group where new infections are increasing, with a 22 percent increase in recent years. Young black MSM are severely affected and now account for more new infections than any other subgroup by race/ethnicity, age and sex. Despite all we have learned about HIV in the past 30 years, the heavy burden persists and we cannot afford to lose a new generation to this entirely preventable infection.
