Mayor Rawlings-Blake Cuts the Ribbon for Baltimore’s First Street-Side Electric Vehicle Charging Stations Today, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake joins the Maryland Department of the Environment Deputy Secretary Kathy Kinsey and Director of Baltimore City General Services Steve Sharkey to officially open for use Baltimore City’s newest and first on-street electric vehicle charging stations. The event also kicks off National Plug-in Day for Baltimore City and the State of Maryland which occurs all weekend on September 28th and 29th, with activities around the country.
Baltimore is a national sustainability leader, implementing best practices to grow a green, healthy, and prosperous City. Following initiatives drawn in the Sustainability Plan, this is a prime example of the steps we’re taking to support energy efficiency and clean our City.
These charging stations promote the use of electric vehicles which reduce our greenhouse gasses and other pollutants. They produce zero direct emissions from their tailpipe, reducing greenhouse gases such as Carbon dioxide and Methane. On average, an electric vehicle prevents 33 pounds of Carbon dioxide over 100 miles from reaching our air making a cleaner, healthier Baltimore.
This is project was completed jointly with the State, who is making great strides to clean our air and promote electric vehicles. Not only are they promoting electric vehicles, but bringing jobs to Maryland, right outside our City, while they do so. General Motors, who joined in on the event, just opened their newest plant in White Marsh, Maryland, to manufacture the motors for the Chevrolet Spark. Please, come and plug-in to our newest chargers any time! These two chargers are located on Lexington Street by the Corner of Lexington Street and Gay Street. Each of the two chargers provides a level 2, 240 volt quick charge. The spaces are open to the public at a parking rate of $1.00 per hour with a 4 hour limit, ensuring you have a place to charge while downtown in Baltimore during meetings, shopping, or eating a meal. These two chargers are the newest additions to our family of chargers, 11 of which are scattered around the City in municipal garages, and many others that have been sub-granted to local businesses and schools.
And remember to support our Electric Vehicle on National Plug-in Day, with the many events in Maryland. This Saturday, while you’re at the Orioles game, stop by the Nation Plug in Day booth to hear more about electric vehicles, and check out a Chevrolet Spark and electric motorcycle.
