PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
Full implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) starts in January and the Health Insurance Marketplace launches on October 1. This interactive webinar examines a trio of practical topics pertinent to adolescents and young adults as we prepare for ACA’s rollout:
- Adolescent health care providers have always recognized the need to attend to patient confidentiality of minors, especially when dealing with sensitive health issues. Provisions of ACA make it imperative that confidentiality be meaningfully addressed for patients of all ages, but adolescents and young adults require special consideration because of sexual/reproductive health and mental health/substance use concerns.
- Young adults are currently least likely to have health insurance and financial access to health care services. The Young Invincibles, a national organization founded in 2009, has substantial experience in providing information to young adults as part of empowering them to take charge of their health care. Young Invincibles staff will share their experiences in reaching out to young adults, introduce a new on-line toolkit designed to assist with enrollment, and briefly discuss the health insurance needs of two special populations of young adults: Youth aging out of foster care and incarcerated young adults re-entering their communities.
- States have been working intensively to prepare for implementation of the Affordable Care Act. About half of states will expand Medicaid eligibility for adults. In addition, about half of states are developing their own health insurance marketplaces or exchanges but about half of states will rely on a federally created health insurance marketplace. An official from the Texas Department of State Health Services will explain how this state is preparing for the Affordable Care Act using the federally created health insurance marketplace and how, even in the absence of an expanded Medicaid program, it plans to assist young adults who do not qualify for Medicaid with health insurance subsidies.
