Approximately 1 in 12 people worldwide have chronic viral hepatitis, and most of them do not know they are infected. In the United States, African Americans have a substantially higher rate of chronic hepatitis C infection than other ethnic groups. Within the African-American community, chronic liver disease, often hepatitis C-related, is a leading cause of death among people aged 45 to 64 years. You can help NIAID scientists pursue effective preventions and treatments for viral hepatitis. If you have hepatitis C and are 18 years or older, you may be eligible to participate in research studies being conducted at the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.
