Addressing Resistance: Two New Treatment Options for Gonorrhea

In the face of growing resistance to antibiotics against gonorrhea, scientists at the NIH and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently completed a clinical trial testing two new treatment regimens combining existing, FDA-approved drugs. Both regimens successfully treated gonorrhea infections, the scientists announced earlier this week. However, they note, current treatment guidelines for gonorrhea will remain the same.

The findings were presented today at the 20th Meeting of the International Society for Sexually Transmitted Diseases Research. For more information on the new regimens and details of the trial results, see the NIAID press release: http://www.niaid.nih.gov/news/newsreleases/2013/Pages/GonorrheaTrial.aspx.
